A toilet that keeps running is easy to ignore. You jiggle the handle, the sound stops, and you move on. But a running toilet can waste a lot of water every day, and a silent leak can do the same without making any noise at all. If your water bill in Hialeah has gone up for no clear reason, the toilet is one of the first places to check.

This guide shows you how to find a toilet leak, which parts usually cause it, and when a repair is enough.

How much water a running toilet wastes

A toilet that runs constantly can waste hundreds of gallons a day, depending on how bad the leak is. Even a slow, silent leak that you cannot hear can add up to thousands of gallons over a month. That water goes straight down the drain, and you pay for it twice in many places, once for water and again for sewer.

Signs of a toilet leak

  • You hear water running or a hiss after the tank has filled
  • The toilet refills by itself every few minutes or hours
  • You have to hold or jiggle the handle to stop it running
  • Water trickles into the bowl long after flushing
  • Your water bill is higher with no change in use

The food coloring test

You can check for a silent leak in a few minutes. Take the lid off the tank and add a few drops of food coloring to the water in the tank. Do not flush. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then look in the bowl. If color has appeared in the bowl, water is leaking from the tank past the flapper. Flush afterward so the coloring does not stain.

The parts that usually cause it

Flapper

The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank. Over time it warps, hardens or collects mineral buildup, so it no longer seals. Water slowly leaks into the bowl and the tank refills to make up for it. In Hialeah, hard water and chlorine speed up this wear.

Fill valve

The fill valve refills the tank after a flush. If it does not shut off at the right level, water runs into the overflow tube and down into the bowl without stopping. A worn or scaled fill valve is a common cause of a constantly running toilet.

Float set too high

If the float is set too high, the water level rises above the top of the overflow tube and drains away all the time. Adjusting the float can fix this, but on older valves the adjustment may not hold.

Chain and handle

A chain that is too short holds the flapper open slightly. A chain that is too long can get caught under the flapper. A loose or corroded handle can do the same.

Leaks at the base

Water on the floor around the toilet is a different problem. It usually means the wax ring under the toilet has failed, or the toilet is loose and rocks. That water can damage the floor and the subfloor, so it should be fixed quickly. A rocking toilet also strains the seal every time someone sits down.

Repair or replace?

Most running toilets only need a new flapper, fill valve or both. These are quick repairs. If the toilet is cracked, clogs often, or is an old model that uses a lot of water per flush, a new water-saving toilet can be the better choice. Our toilet repair service covers both, and we check the shut-off valve and supply line while we are there.

When it is not the toilet

If the toilets pass the food coloring test and the meter still moves with everything off, the leak is somewhere else. It could be a faucet, a supply line inside a wall or a leak under the slab. Our leak detection service finds the source so you are not guessing.

Quick checklist

  • Listen for running water after the tank fills
  • Do the food coloring test in each toilet
  • Check the floor around the base for water
  • Rock the toilet gently to see if it moves
  • Watch the water meter with all water off
