If you live in Hialeah, you have probably seen white crust on your faucets and shower heads. That crust is mineral scale from hard water, and the same minerals are building up inside your water heater, where you cannot see them. Over time that scale makes the heater louder, slower and more expensive to run, and it is one of the main reasons tanks fail early in South Florida.
This guide explains what hard water does inside a tank, the warning signs to watch for, and the maintenance that helps a water heater last.
What hard water does inside a tank
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When the water is heated, those minerals come out of solution and settle as scale. In an electric water heater, the most common type in Hialeah homes, scale collects at the bottom of the tank and coats the heating elements.
A layer of scale acts like insulation. The elements have to work harder and run longer to heat the same amount of water, which raises your electric bill. Elements covered in scale also burn out sooner. In gas heaters, scale on the bottom of the tank causes hot spots that stress the steel and the glass lining.
Signs your water heater is struggling
- Popping, crackling or rumbling sounds when the heater runs
- Hot water runs out faster than it used to
- Water takes longer to get hot
- Cloudy, rusty or sandy hot water
- A small puddle or rust stains around the base of the tank
- Higher electric bills with no change in use
Noise and slow heating usually mean scale. Rusty water or water at the base can mean the tank itself is corroding, which is a sign replacement is close.
Repair or replace?
Many problems are simple repairs. A failed element or thermostat is common on electric tanks and costs much less than a new heater. If the tank is under eight years old and not leaking, a repair and a flush often make sense.
If the tank leaks, the water is rusty, or the heater is more than 10 to 12 years old, a new heater is usually the better value. When we come out for water heater repair, we test the parts and give you both prices side by side so you can decide.
How to make a water heater last longer
Flush the tank once a year
Draining a few gallons from the valve at the bottom of the tank removes loose scale before it hardens. A full flush once a year is a good habit in Hialeah. If you have never done it on an older tank, ask a plumber first, because a valve that has not been opened in years can leak.
Check the anode rod
The anode rod is a metal rod inside the tank that corrodes so the tank does not. In hard water it can wear out in a few years. Replacing a worn anode rod is one of the cheapest ways to extend the life of a tank.
Set the temperature right
A setting around 120 degrees Fahrenheit is hot enough for most homes and reduces scale buildup compared with higher settings.
Consider water treatment
A water softener or conditioner reduces the minerals that form scale. It protects the water heater as well as faucets, toilets and appliances. Ask us about the options if scale is a constant problem in your home.
Tank or tankless?
Tankless water heaters heat water on demand and take up less space, but they are also affected by hard water and need regular descaling. Electric tankless units can also need a bigger electrical service. We explain the cost and upkeep of each so you can choose what fits your home.
Leaks around the heater
Water around the base is not always the tank. It can be a loose fitting, the relief valve or a supply line. If you are not sure where water is coming from, our leak detection and repair service finds the source before you replace anything.
A quick checklist
- Listen for popping or rumbling noises
- Note how long hot water lasts compared with last year
- Look for water or rust at the base of the tank
- Check the age on the label, usually in the serial number
- Flush once a year and check the anode rod every few years
